In boxing, matchmakers utilize similar talents as the ones in the play, but with decidedly different results. Just how does one become a matchmaker? All matchmakers interviewed for this article agreed on one prerequisite for the job — a love of boxing.

Matchmaking in the world of boxing has long been a feast-or-famine proposition, though hurdles involving various promotions, networks, streaming services and alphabet organizations have increased complications significantly. Still, in recent years, boxing fans have been treated to some thrilling contests involving high level opposition. I decided to make it my goal to compete in, and ideally win, one of the more prestigious amateur boxing I competed in my first amateur boxing match today.

Anyone familiar with me knows that I make odds on just about everything, and one of those things is boxing, including a lot of the lesser-profile.

In the third of our series examining key and often unheralded figures from behind the scenes in boxing, Ezio Prapotnich talks to Derek Waddell about the often overlooked art of matchmaking They are called matchmakers. Their job is to find the right opponent at the right moment not only to make the house fighter look good but also for you to get your money’s worth and enjoy a competitive match. Hailing from the East End of London, a historical stomping ground for boxing, former amateur pugilist Derek Waddell is one of these men and explains to Boxing Monthly that technical knowledge is not the most important tool of the matchmaker’s trade – above anything else, you must care about fighters’ well-being.

Boxing clubs were literally on every other corner. Most people I knew had tried their hand at it. Instead of turning professional I chose to pursue my education, gaining a Class 2. I still continued training at local clubs and retained an interest in boxing over the years, also attending shows. I started talking to some Eastern European boxers training at one of the gyms I went to and they asked me how they could get fights in Britain.

In those days you had to apply for an agent’s licence, the title was changed to matchmaker later.

The Pacman collected yet another title in an unprecedented eighth weight division with his win over Antonio Margarito despite significant disadvantages in height, strength and weight. Even when his contract expired and Pacquiao accepted a briefcase full of cash to sign with Golden Boy Promotions, Pacquiao side-stepped a contract and stayed with Top Rank which only added fuel to the fire between the two promoters and prompted more than one lawsuit that is still going on to this day. The short answer: tremendously different. Pacquiao has been named fighter of the year by the Boxing Writers Association of America multiple times and his trainer Freddie Roach has been named trainer of the year multiple times for his work with Pacquiao as well.

Every major promoter has a matchmaker but Trampler has helped prune careers of young boxers like De La Hoya, Miguel Cotto and Pacquiao into superstars. There is a method of how to step a fighter up in his career that will give him both noteworthy wins and the most amount of acclaim with the least amount of risk. You need your matchmaker to help you avoid those catastrophic knockout losses, as a promoter and as a fighter.
