A fantastic vintage 4×5 large format camera with lens that needs a little work! This is a Crown Graphic 4×5 Press camera with a mm F4. Although the camera works, it is in rough condition. This camera shows plenty of signs of sitting in someone’s garage for years, and was clearly used but not abused.
The bellows are in great condition, all the mechanical movements work properly, and the shutter fires great, the speeds all sound good remarkable, considering how it’s….

Favored by newspapermen of the s up to the s, the Graflex Crown Graphic camera is still alive and kicking with its various features and the high-quality photos it can produce. The Crown Graphic is a 4×5 folding camera that uses large format film. It is similar to the Graflex Pacemaker Speed Graphic but was made without the focal plane shutter.
The Crown Graphic is lightweight.

The Pacemaker Speed Graphic was one of the longest produced large format cameras, produced from to twenty-three years. It came complete with several film holders and a flash. Later on, I found the original case for it at an auction. The Speedgraphics were made famous by press photographers in the s, such as “Weegee” Arthur Fellig. Dating the Graphic: There was a modification made in that put the rangefinder on the top of the camera to make it easier to attach a side-flash. My unit is thus from the

William Folmer was a bicyle maker when he got interested in photography; and being an inventor, he saw ways to make improvements. Through most of the 19th century, light-sensitive materials which I’ll call film for simplicity here were not very light sensitive, so exposures were measured in seconds and minutes, and could be done by simply taking the lens cap off for the required time and then putting it back on.
But as film became more sensitive, photographers needed a way of making faster exposures. Folmer’s idea was a mechanically moving curtain that was located right next to the film in the back of the camera, and it became known as the focal-plane shutter. Many of the best film cameras still use focal-plane shutter. The Graflex was the company’s marquee brand, but it was the Graphic that really endured.

For us today, it looks like a very cumbersome camera to be used in situations requiring agility. Only the size, for that there is no remedy. Weegee on the left is probably the most famous user and enthusiast of Graphic cameras. It is interesting to think that at the same time, Henri Cartier Bresson, French, was using his tiny Leica, 35 mm, and setting the standard for another kind of snap shot.
While Bresson was quiet and sneak, in seising his images, Weegee probably took pleasure from the flare that certified his subjects that yes, they were caught. It is like comparing a pickpocket with an armed robber. Holding on to keep from falling, he looks at the remains of his camera thrown to the ground. Speed Graphics exist since , but in Graflex realised that most of the time photographers did not use the focal plane shutter and then took it off launching the Crown Graphic, lighter and shorter.
The difference can be seen on the picture below. While the front is the same, the sides of the cameras are different. Film holders are interchangeable with most of other brands like Linhof. Above is the spring back. In which you can insert film holders without the need of removing ground glass. Even better is the Graflok back that allow the same and yet can be easily removed if you want to insert a roll film adapter.

Around that time I was talking about this to a guy who had been a fine art and commercial photographer for decades and he suggested I get a Crown Graphic as a cheap way into large format, which turned out to be excellent advice. They are also simple to use yet capable of producing high quality photos. There are basically three designs of large format cameras — monorails, field and press.
Press cameras were designed to be used by newspaper, wedding and general jobbing commercial photographers. When not being used they fold up inside a box; pressing a button opens the front panel and allows the lens and bellows to be moved along the tracks for framing and focusing. This was fine with me as it was how I was planning to use the camera anyway.

Hello, I recently bought a Graflex Crown Graphic u know like Weegee – pictured above in tremendously good condition and i have a couple questions, if u can help that would be great. Would I loose that “look”? I want to shoot in black and white mostly but i also want an option for color. I don’t have a dark room but I live in LA so i can find plenty of places to get it developed and printed on large prints.
If you have any other tips please feel free to share : thank you so much!!!

I am selling a gorgeous Graflex Crown Graphic 4X5 field camera. Perfect condition, and unbelievably gorgeous. I have had a photo professional assess the quality and condition of the camera and it is in perfect working condition! Email me with best offer! This is the second Crown Graphic I’ve owned, the first was a “special” with the mm Xenar lens, in overall good condition. Sold it, regretted it, and bought another one. Outstanding lens, slightly sharper than the Xenar in my opinion. As far as shooting: these cameras were made to take pictures under all sorts of conditions and are very tough.
Perfect for backpacking. Can be focused and shot handheld using the top mounted rangefinder. Add a roll film adapter and it’s like having two cameras in one. Shooting in dimly lit situations? Push the red button on the rangefinder and simply align the two projected light beams into one. Someone modified mine to replace the bulb with a laser.

We are working on a film right now that takes place in and I am looking for S. Mendelsohn Speedgun flashes. I have one but I need about 8 more. There seem to be very difficult to find.
it is probably a Speed Graphic. If so, the serial number is stamped into the wood under the top, at the handle-side of the camera, and I could date it with that.
Lenses for a 4×5″ are specialized. Some lenses are designed for use only on the smaller 3. Bausch and Lomb was a manufacturer in the pre-war period. Due to manufacturing, supply, and legal problems, there were relatively few post-war German Zeiss Tessars made. A used Graphic will typically be found fitted with a General Purpose lens. Tessar-type lenses, such as a Kodak Ektar mm or Graflex Optar mm, are common.
These vintage lenses do not have sufficient coverage to allow the use of movements when focused at infinity.
